TRADITIONAL SKINNING AND BUTCHERY WORKSHOP

On your first day, you’ll step into the world of ethical, nose-to-tail butchery. Guided by Zeki, you’ll learn how to respectfully break down a deer and make use of every part of the animal.

Skills you’ll learn:

  • How to butcher and break down a deer step-by-step
  • Understanding different cuts of venison and their uses
  • Traditional preservation techniques including curing
  • How to utilise the whole animal:
    • Hide for leather and buckskin (using brain tanning methods)
    • Sinew for natural cordage and sewing
    • Meat preparation and flavour exploration

You’ll also sample a range of prepared venison products and take some meat home to continue experimenting yourself.

NATURE AND FORAGING WALK

Day two takes you out into the landscape for a guided foraging walk during one of the most vibrant times of year - spring. Explore the grounds surrounding Monachyle Mhor Hotel and discover the rich variety of plants, trees, mushrooms, fruits, nuts and lichens that thrive here.

Along the way, Zeki Basan will share stories and traditional knowledge, revealing how these species have been used for food, medicine, tools and everyday living.

What to expect:

  • Identification of seasonal wild foods and edible plants
  • Understanding the nutritional value of spring growth
  • Insights into how our ancestors used and valued these plants
  • Stories, folklore, and cultural connections to the land
  • A relaxed, engaging walk through the surrounding glen

This experience offers a deeper understanding of the land beneath your feet, revealing how the natural world has sustained people for generations.

"I aim to hold on to the ancient skills and craft that were once part of everyday life and to this day can give us a greater understanding and respect of the environment around us."

ABOUT ZEKI

Born and raised in the Scottish Highlands and deeply connected to the wild landscapes that shaped him. From his home in the Cairngorms National Park, he leads bespoke, immersive experiences rooted in traditional living skills - whether deer stalking in the Highlands, foraging in Scotland’s boreal forests or fishing Arctic char on the fjords of Greenland - creating adventures that are both authentic and unforgettable.

Passionate about preserving and practising ancestral knowledge, Zeki teaches a wide range of crafts including foraging, fire craft and fire cooking, tracking and stalking, trapping, butchery, tool making, tanning and leatherwork, shelter building, basketry and wood carving. His learning is continual and experiential; time spent with Indigenous communities such as the San Bushmen has deepened his understanding of hunting and gathering traditions, inspiring his film The Wild Within Us.

A qualified Lantra-trained Tree Surgeon and former Glacier Guide in Iceland, Zeki also collaborates with Patrick McGlinchey to run the Highlander Course in the Cairngorms and leads RVIVALs Wild Lives experinces in Greenland, working alongside a local family to share traditional skills in one of the world’s last great wildernesses.
